Ben Keith, co-founder of International Human Rights Advisors and leading extradition barrister at 5 St Andrew’s Hill, will be chairing the Defence Extradition Lawyers Forum (DELF) seminar, examining a case currently before the European Court of Justice.
The case involves a Greek citizen whose extradition to Georgia, where he faces a life sentence, was refused by Belgian courts due to risks of violations of Articles 3 and 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Following his subsequent arrest in France, Georgia made an identical extradition request to the French authorities. This case challenges the principle of mutual recognition, particularly when one member state has already refused extradition on fundamental rights grounds.
The seminar Trust Your Neighbour? Mutual Recognition of Extradition Decisions will feature Belgian lawyer Jean-Christophe De Block, who defended against the original extradition, and French lawyer Marie Poirot, presenting one of their cases pending before the ECJ.
The discussion will be chaired by Ben Keith, a leading International Human Rights Lawyer specialising in extradition and Interpol matters. He has represented clients in over 500 extradition cases, appeared before the European Court of Human Rights, and has extensive experience with Interpol Red Notice removals and politically motivated prosecutions across multiple jurisdictions.
