Ben Keith to Speak at United Nations Side-Event on Landmine Victim Compensation
On 1st April 2025, Ben Keith will be speaking at a side event during the 58th Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Launch of Landmine Campaign to Achieve UNHRC Recognition of Rights of Landmine Victims to Compensation
Leading international law and human rights barrister Ben Keith will speak at a critical UNHRC side-event during the 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC58), discussing the rights of landmine victims to compensation. The event, co-hosted by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the UN and the Universal Rights Group (URG), marks the launch of the Campaign for Landmine Justice.
The event takes place ahead of the International Day of Mine Awareness on 4th April. The Campaign for Landmine Justice will advocate for the recognition of compensation rights for landmine victims, holding manufacturers and deploying states accountable. The discussion will also highlight the interconnections between landmines, human rights, and environmental degradation.
Commenting on the Launch of the Landmine Campaign, international law and human rights expert Rhys Davies stated:
“With landmine use resurging due to global conflicts, we must apply the ‘polluter pays’ principle as an added deterrent to indiscriminate, large-scale deployment. The Campaign for Landmine Justice will fight to ensure this principle is upheld.”
Ben and Rhys co-authored an article on the subject for Euronews.
